the greenhouse by joost

This amazing pop-up event venue and cafe, called 'The Greenhouse by Joost', is a temporary but salient reminder of what can be done with waste. The structure was created on site in 14 days, from hay bales and deconstructed shipping containers. For a short time you can sit on chairs made from used street signs, and eat food grown locally in Joost's family's greenhouses, then the whole thing will be hauled over to the Milan Furniture Fair. I really wish I lived in Melbourne. Or that Joost was single. Or both. (For the record, I am a happily married woman.)

From Vogue Living Australia (jan/Feb 09). I apologize for the general crappiness of these images. No scanner, only digital camera - that's no excuse though.

the house that joost built

I was so excited to see inside Joost Bakker's home in the recent Vogue Living Australia (Jan/Feb 09). Joost is a multi-talented Dutch floral designer and all-around interesting dude based in Melbourne, who puts into practice all kinds of environmental ideas. His house is ringed with terracotta pots, ready to be planted with edibles like strawberries and herbs, or succulents. The lights made from rusted chrysanthemum guide wire are one of my favorite touches (above). Joost's home is mainly constructed of straw bales and recycled concrete blocks. As he puts it, "my whole life has been about using the stuff that people throw away."

Tomorrow I'll post the article about his most recent project, 'The Greenhouse by Joost', a "self-sustaining, fully recyclable, pop-up event venue made entirely from detritus".

nyc: abc home & carpet

ABC Home & Carpet was a must-see for me in New York. The selection and styling of the goods approaches an artform. Lots of natural wood, organic forms and pieces that scream Authentic.

I couldn't take my eyes off the silk-flower wall on the ground floor - I still haven't decided whether I love it or despise it. I do love the petrified stump tables below.

Nice ceramics by Jan Burtz. Makes me wonder if you can register for your wedding at ABC?

The natural goods area had a great display of the elements that go into their products - cotton, flax, linen, and a bunch of stuff I couldn't identify.

The children's area had this sweet soft branch with hanging pods. Something about it resonates with how I see a comfy baby's room.

Chandelier of cast metal twigs and glass drops. Natural and sophisticated all at the same time.

portland: ink&peat

I just wanted to give a big congrats to Pam, from housemartin, for opening her new floral and homewares shop, Ink&Peat. You can see some stunning images of the space, and all that fills it at housemartin. Image from Ink&Peat portfolio.

austin: gardens

One of my favorite shops to visit for inspiration in Austin is Gardens (they now have a Dallas location too!). The owners and employees scour the globe for unusual and unique homewares and garden items...and the plant selection is unparalleled. The Gardens staff are responsible for some of the most lush and exciting landscape design around this arid town. Check out their website for more great pics.

wild ginger

Spotted in InsideOut Sept/Oct 07, I love this casual gathering of wild ginger. Ginger grows here in New Zealand like a weed, but I don't think I've ever seen it used in an arrangement; maybe it's just too common! I think it lends a breath of fresh air to this traditional room...
